4 Tips for Spring De-winterisation

Writer's picture: WellisWellis

If you're fortunate to have a water feature like a hot tub or swim spa in your backyard, you and your family are probably excited to reopen it for spring as winter ends.

Some of you may have even already begun this process, which includes a few basic areas to ensure your winterisation was done properly and no issues have come up with your tub.

Here are some suggestions for getting your hot tub ready for the active spring and summer months by de-winterising it.

Checking for Winter Damage

This step is the most crucial, and although it can be swapped with the next step in terms of sequence in the work process, it is vital to execute this step meticulously, regardless of whether you do it first.

First, remove the hot tub cover and inspect all visible pipe sections for cracks or damage that could affect water flow and increase your bill. Also, check wiring and other areas for rodent bites or droppings, ensure drain plugs are present. Connect the detachable joints of the motors and controls and verify that drain covers, jets, and lights inside the tub are functioning correctly.

Clean the Tub Properly

This is an ideal opportunity to clean the tub thoroughly for the upcoming year, as it will be empty. The primary focus should be on cleaning materials: for acrylic tubs, we suggest using a wet, soft cloth along with specific agents that can address puddles or other winter residues. Clean the spa body thoroughly of any dirt that may have fallen into it during the winter season.

After cleaning the tub itself, clean all accessible cabinets and install the new filters purchased. Do not use the old or dirty filters.

Then clean hot tub cover while waiting for the tub to fill.

Fill Spa with Fresh Water

After cleaning the interior of the tub, you can start filling it using your regular garden hose. This process usually takes at least an hour, depending on the hose's flow rate and the size of your pool. Remember to check periodically to avoid overfilling and wasting water. Once the tub is filled turn it on.

Sanitise your Hot Tub

Ultimately, after filling the tub, it's important to confirm that the water quality is safe for human use. This involves balancing the pH levels, as well as the calcium and alkalinity balance. So, test, check, refill and adjust chemicals.

Then ensure there are no error messages or air locks are present and check operational capabilities to ensure the spa is running correctly (drips, leaks and  motors).
